LANSING – State Representatives Deb Kennedy (D-Brownstown) and Dian Slavens (D-Canton) today announced that a plan to create jobs for more than 23,800 Michigan workers, stimulate our economy and bring much-needed improvement to Michigan's ailing roads and bridges has passed the Senate and is one step closer to being signed into law. The economic stimulus plan, which passed the House last week and is expected to pump more than $635 million into Michigan's economy, now heads to the Governor's desk.
"Fixing our roads is critical to helping our economy," Kennedy said. "Doing so will get our residents back on the job and improve road conditions for Michigan drivers. Investing in Michigan's infrastructure is going to benefit not only current residents for years to come, but our children as well."
The $635 million federal stimulus package will provide funding for more than 130 road and bridge improvement projects around the state, and create jobs for Michigan workers. Some of the local projects include:
- $1.5 million to repair and reconstruct ramps on I-94 at Belleville and Haggerty.
- $2 million to repair and reconstruct of a portion of Telegraph Road extending south of Vreeland Road.
- $4.7 million to repair and improve I-94 in Wayne County.
- $1.7 million to improve traffic and safety on I-94 in Wayne County.
- $20.5 million to repair 10 bridges over I-96 in Wayne County.
"I am pleased by the overwhelming bipartisan support this bill received from my colleagues in the House and Senate," Slavens said. "These infrastructure improvements will be a catalyst for economic development and job creation throughout the state and enhance Michigan's status as an attractive destination for new and emerging industries."
