LANSING – State Representative Deb Kennedy (D-Brownstown) this week was on hand to watch as 4th grade student Melanie Smalley was awarded first place in the Severe Weather Awareness poster contest.
"Because of Michigan's unpredictable weather patterns, Severe Weather Awareness Week helps keep our state's residents updated and informed of any potential dangers," Kennedy said. "For a native of my community to win this award, it says a lot about the talent we possess here in Brownstown. I congratulate Melanie on her award, and encourage her to utilize her talent to its fullest extent."
Governor Granholm declared the week of March 29 as Severe Weather Awareness Week. This campaign encourages residents to protect themselves and their homes before any potential disasters that accompany spring arise. The Michigan Committee for Severe Weather Awareness sponsored a contest that allowed students to design a poster to promote Severe Weather Awareness Week. Melanie Smalley, a home school student from Brownstown, was this year's first place winner of the contest.
"Melanie's poster shows what dedication and talent can create," Kennedy said. "Because of her poster, she may help save a family from the dangers of severe weather. Young residents like Melanie are out there helping people and she's already becoming an asset to the community."
