LANSING – Freshman State Representative Deb Kennedy (D-Brownstown) today took part in a swearing-in ceremony today in chamber of the Michigan House of Representatives that marked the first day of the 95th Legislature.
"I'm honored to represent the people of Downriver, and truly humbled that they have put their trust in me to serve them," said Kennedy, who represents the 23rd House District. "We have a lot of work to do in the House, and I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and dive in. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Legislature to create and protect good-paying jobs, strengthen our schools, attract more employers to Michigan and protect our natural resources."
After the ceremony, Kennedy and her colleagues went to work immediately by introducing the Hire Michigan First plan, which will ensure that Michigan workers get the first chance at jobs created by companies that benefit from state economic development programs or tax breaks. The plan cracks down on companies that hire illegal workers by canceling their state contracts and tax incentives. It also requires those companies to pay back incentives already received and bars them from obtaining future contracts.
Also on Kennedy's agenda is reducing lawmakers' pay, a plan that passed the House last year but was stalled in the Republican-controlled Senate.
"Good-paying jobs and a better economy don't just appear out of nowhere," Kennedy said. "It's time to bring about positive change for our residents in southern Wayne County, and for all residents throughout our great state. I'm ready to get down to business and work hard to ensure that Michigan is a great place to live, work, do business and raise a family."
Kennedy was officially sworn in to her first term by Lieutenant Governor John Cherry on Jan. 6 in the House chamber.
