LANSING – State Representative Deb Kennedy (D-Brownstown) was selected Monday to serve on the Southern Great Lakes Symphony (SGLS) Board of Directors, where she will play an active role in managing the business and artistic objectives of the nonprofit classical music organization.
"It is a great honor to be part of such a prestigious organization," said Kennedy. "For more than 50 years, the Southern Great Lakes Symphony has been presenting meaningful and quality classical music for the entire Downriver area to enjoy. I am committed to working closely with fellow board members to enable this high-quality, professional orchestra to continue that tradition of excellence."
The SGLS is Downriver's premier classical music organization. Since its early beginnings as group of volunteer Allen Park musicians, the symphony has grown into a professional regional orchestra whose members come from all over the Downriver area as well as metropolitan Detroit.
The nonprofit organization is governed by local volunteers who serve on its board of directors. This group has total responsibility for managing the business, property and affairs of the SGLS, as well as setting policy, selecting personnel and approving guest artists.
Kennedy, who was named to the SGLS board during the group's annual meeting on Monday, will begin her three-year term as a board member on July 1.
"I believe it's important to support the arts, and I am so proud of the vibrant arts community we have in the Downriver area," Kennedy said. "The more vibrant our communities, the more attractive they are to businesses, which helps spur job growth and economic development. By supporting organizations like the Southern Great Lakes Symphony we're not only promoting artistic and cultural awareness, we're investing in our community."
