Since Michigan's drug industry immunity law was passed in 1996, at least five high-profile, popular drugs have pulled off the shelves because of dangerous defects. Resulin was pulled off the market in 2000, after it was linked to nearly 400 deaths and thousands of cases of liver failure. Vioxx was pulled in 2004 because of strong links to heart attacks or cardiac deaths. The FDA estimates that Vioxx may have killed 55,000 people. The weight loss pill Fen-phen was banned in 1997 after causing hypertension and heart valve abnormalities in tens of thousands of people. Bextra was taken off the market in 2006 due to an increased risk of heart attack and serious skin reactions.
My bill allows anyone who has been harmed by these and other drugs to finally take action and hold the drug makers accountable - something they have been denied for over 10 years. This fight is about giving people a voice. Repealing this faulty law will restore the voice of people like Leslie Richter and Joe Hargrove who were harmed years ago but have been denied justice.
Michigan's unfair law has silenced out citizens for too long. We need to take action now.
